The Friday Cafe was developed by Brilliant Burma to educate and train students in a broad range of disciplines and skills with an emphasis on the development of critical thinking ability, improving general knowledge, and providing a participatory educational opportunity. To achieve this, we conduct regular workshops, seminars and lectures that expose our students to new ideas, instructors, and organizations.

Colonel Ner Dah Mya is an officer of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), the military wing of Karen National Union (KNU) and son of Bo Mya, the legendary and revered Karen national leader for most of its 60 year civil war. Ner Dah Mya met with Brilliant Burma students to discuss issues and answer questions.

Seminar on Democratic Transitions

Lessons Learned from the Central and East European Transitions to Democracy: Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Serbia, Ukraine (Two Day Seminar) was presented by Ph.D. Pavel Pšeja, Assistant Professor at the Department of International Relations at Masarik University, Brno, Czech Republic and Igor Blaževic, head teacher at the Foreign Affairs Training, Chiang Mai, Thailand. This seminar dealt with the strategies and tactics of democratic forces in achieving political change and the failures and mistakes made by the democratic opposition during the transition process. Lecturers engage with participants in debate and discussion about the relevancy of those Central and East European experiences for the Burmese.

Michael Martin shared his recent experience as an election monitor for OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights in the Republic of Kazakhstan's Early Parliamentary Elections – 15 January 2012, and engaged the students on issues affecting Burma's future, including the coming elections.

Khun Myint Htun, General Secretary of Pa-Oh National Liberation Organization (PNLO), Member of Parliament from Thaton Constituency, and former political prisoner in Burma, spoke to a joint meeting of Brilliant Burma and Naga Youth to discuss the future of Burma and the role of Burma's Next Generation.
